In the past five days, the screening platform for the Chinese Covid-19 vaccine clinical trials, conducted by the Butantan Institute, registered almost 1 million candidates. The application in volunteers starts as early as Monday (20). However, enrollment remains open until the 9,000 selected foreseen in this stage of testing the vaccine produced by Sinovac, from China, are reached. In an interview with ÉPOCA, the hematologist Dimas Covas, director of the Butantan Institute, said that he hopes to complete the application of the vaccines to the volunteers by September and showed optimism about the deadline for completing the testing phase. “It would be very opportune to end this stage by the end of this year,” said Covas.
The Butantan Institute is responsible for testing in Brazil of the vaccine developed by the Chinese company Sinovac. What is the current stage of this process?
We are at the beginning of phase three, which effectively starts on Monday with the vaccination of the first volunteers. We hope to complete this phase very quickly. We want to vaccinate all 9,000 volunteers by September. From there, we move on to the follow-up phase, which means periodically evaluating the vaccine’s efficacy data. This phase should occur later this year. We are optimistic about the deadline. It would be very opportune to end this stage by the end of this year. And, at the beginning of next year, the vaccine would start to be distributed.
