Scientists have developed antibodies that can kill coronavirus

S

The flu kills thousands of people each year, yet we’re not afraid of it because we know what to do when the first symptoms appear. We can immediately recognize the signs and treat them with over the counter drugs. We know when things aren’t working and only then do we go for professional help. We can even get vaccines each year to help avoid reinfection.

Hospitals around the world have been using plasma from COVID-19 survivors to treat patients with weaker immune systems that weren’t able to generate their own coronavirus-killing antibodies. That strategy works for other infectious diseases and has been used for more than 100 years. Plasma from COVID-19 patients who have recovered has saved many lives already, as plenty of reports have shown, but the therapy has a considerable downside: It’s not scalable to meet demand.

Researchers from the Netherlands, Israel, and Japan have synthesized strong antibodies that have neutralized the virus in lab conditions. The next step is testing the creations on humans in clinical trials. If the drugs are effective and safe, they could hit mass-production soon and become standard COVID-19 therapies.

This restaurant in Amsterdam introduced ‘quarantine greenhouses’ so diners can eat while social distancing

Missing restaurants while social distancing? You’re not alone. One restaurant in the Netherlands, though, has found a solution.

Mediamatic ETEN, a restaurant in Amsterdam, is offering a four-course vegetarian menu for diners — served to guests while they sit in their own personal quarantine greenhouses.

Still, as many places begin to loosen restrictions on social distancing, this type of greenhouse dining could take off.

“It’s super cozy, it’s really cozy, it’s nice and the food is delicious,” diner Janita Vermeulen told Reuters.

Waiters wear gloves and face shields to alleviate any risk of infections, the restaurant confirmed. They also use long boards to bring dishes into the greenhouses to diners.

Cabinet eases series of corona measures, the Netherlands in ‘new phase’

C

The “first outbreak phase” of the coronavirus is behind us, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said last night. “We are now entering the phase where we have to make the transition to the 1.5 meter society.”

The plan is now to get almost all contact professions back to work from 11 May . Hairdressers, foot care workers, masseurs do have to work by appointment. 1.5 meters should be kept between the customers . Driving schools are also allowed to return to work. The CBR also resumes the  exams .

For outdoor sports , they can also get back to work with that reservation, including people over 18 years old. This mainly concerns non-contact sports , such as tennis and golf.

The motto ‘stay at home as much as possible’ also changes on May 11 to: ‘stay at home if you have health problems’ . The advice remains to keep 1.5 meters apart.

From 1 June, terraces may open again, just like beach bars. Also restaurants can again receive guests, but only by reservation. The maximum number of guests is then thirty. Also cinemas, concert halls, museums  and theaters open again, they must also take the maximum number of visitors in thirty eight. For families, however, they do not have to keep a distance of 1.5 meters when they go to the cinema or eat out. It is being investigated whether this can also apply to music venues.

Lockdown eased: Netherlands and France plan to re-open primary schools

L

Several European countries are to relax coronavirus restrictions related to children, with Holland and France announcing that primary schools will reopen next month and Spain setting out how under-14s will be allowed out of the home from next week.

French children would return to school in staggered year groups, the education minister, Jean-Michel Blanquer said, with no more than 15 pupils allowed in each class.

Primary pupils aged from five to 11 would be the first to go back on 12 May, one day after the end of a strict nationwide lockdown. The following week older children in selected years at secondary schools and lycée would return. All classes would be back by 25 May.

Infection rate appears to be falling sharply in the Netherlands

I

The coronavirus has been losing momentum since March 16 and that trend seems to be continuing. That says RIVM director Jaap van Dissel in the House of Representatives. That conclusion does not mean that the measures can be relaxed more immediately.

According to the RIVM boss, the spread of the virus has continued to decrease every day since the tipping point (stabilization of the outbreak) in mid-March, but new patients are being added.

TB Vaccine Could Be a Valuable Weapon in COVID-19 Fight

T

The tuberculosis (TB) vaccine, Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG), could be a potential weapon in combatting the deadly coronavirus according to findings published by NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) researchers, led by Gonzalo Otazu, Ph.D., assistant professor of biomedical sciences.

The United States currently leads the world in confirmed COVID-19 cases, followed by Italy, per the latest report from Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE). Now NYITCOM researchers propose that the severity of COVID-19 impact may be linked to varying national policies on BCG childhood vaccination.

“We found that countries without universal policies of BCG vaccination, such as Italy, the Netherlands, and the United States have been more severely affected compared to countries with universal and long-standing BCG policies,” the researchers state.

Australia’s Trialing a TB Vaccine Against COVID-19, And Health Workers Get It First

Australian researchers are fast-tracking large-scale human testing to see if a vaccine used for decades to prevent tuberculosis can protect health workers from COVID-19, they announced Friday.

The trial of the BCG vaccine will be conducted with 4,000 health workers in hospitals around Australia to determine if it can reduce COVID-19 symptoms, the researchers at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Melbourne said.

“Although originally developed against tuberculosis, and still given to over 130 million babies annually for that purpose, BCG also boosts humans’ ‘frontline’ immunity, training it to respond to germs with greater intensity,” they said in a statement.

“We hope to see a reduction in the prevalence and severity of COVID-19 symptoms in healthcare workers receiving the BCG vaccination,” said lead researcher Nigel Curtis.

He said the 4,000 subjects would be enrolled in the trial within weeks under a fast-tracked process with the approval of state and federal health authorities. “The clock is definitely ticking,” he said.

Similar trials are being conducted in several other countries including the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom.
