UK – Mass Covid tests trialled in Liverpool ‘cut transmission by 90% & can help us get back to normal ASAP’

U

Pregnancy-style Covid tests could allow Brits to socialise again after trials in Liverpool show they can reduce transmission by 90 per cent.

The rapid turnaround tests will play a “major role” in returning life to normal, Oxford Uni scientists said today.

Testing shows the checks can effectively pick up more than three in four positive cases – the majority of which are currently being missed.

Experts say they are now looking at how the new technology, which can provide results in under 30 minutes, could be self-administered.

The kits, known as lateral flow tests, have been trialled across England to find out their effectiveness, including a city-wide pilot in Liverpool which was launched last week.

The tests involve a swab of the nose and throat, just like a PCR test.

It’s then inserted into a tube of liquid for a short period of time.

Drops of that liquid are then added to a strip – similar to a pregnancy test – and about half an hour later a result is shown.

Public Health England today said that their extensive clinical evaluation has proven them to be accurate and reliable enough for community-use.

Sir John Bell, professor of medicine at Oxford University, said: “‘The data in this validation report demonstrates that these inexpensive, easy to use tests can play a major role in our fight against Covid-19.

“They identify those who are likely to spread the disease and when used systematically in mass testing could reduce transmissions by 90 per cent.“

Russia Says Early Data Show Its Covid-19 Vaccine 92% Effective

R

The developer of Russia’s flagship vaccine against Covid-19 said it shows a 92% efficacy rate in preventing cases of the illness, as the country pushes for a top slot in the fight against the coronavirus after a rival product by Pfizer Inc. reported a similar breakthrough.

The preliminary Phase 3 findings are based on results from 20,000 volunteers who were given the first dose, including more than 16,000 who also received a second injection, its developers Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology and the Russian Direct Investment Fund said in an announcement on Twitter Wednesday.

Russia, which said it was the first in the world to do so when it registered Sputnik V in August, has faced skepticism from scientists and pharmaceutical companies, who say that more testing is necessary to prove the inoculation is safe and effective.

Mass testing for 67 local areas in England

M

Mass testing for coronavirus will be rolled out to 67 more areas in England, the health secretary has said.

Areas including Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and parts of the West Midlands will receive new rapid “lateral flow” tests.

Matt Hancock said he hoped the new tests would find Covid-19 “wherever it is, especially in those high prevalence areas”.

It follows the launch of a mass testing programme of people in Liverpool.

The Department of Health and Social Care said it was sending 600,000 of the rapid tests out to directors of public health in 67 areas – listed below – as part of plans to expand asymptomatic testing for Covid-19.

It added that it will be up to individual directors of public health to decide how the tests are used. It means, overall, 70 areas will have the new tests.

News of the scheme came as the head of England’s Test and Trace programme, Baroness Dido Harding, told MPs the service was not a “silver bullet” to tackle coronavirus.

The Conservative peer revealed that preliminary data showed a little over half of people – 54% – who were asked to self-isolate for 14 days said they had complied with the rules.

The NHS will be ready from December to roll out the new coronavirus vaccine if it gets approved

T

The NHS will be ready from December to roll out the new coronavirus vaccine if it gets approved, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said.

Mr Hancock told MPs the news about the vaccine was an important step but “there are no guarantees”.

He also said “we don’t know” how many people will need to be vaccinated in order for life to return to normal.

And he announced that, from Tuesday, NHS staff will begin being tested twice a week.

On Monday, early results from the world’s first effective coronavirus vaccine showed it could prevent more than 90% of people from getting Covid.

The vaccine has been developed by pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and BioNTech and is one of 11 vaccines that are currently in the final stages of testing.

The companies now plan to apply for emergency approval to use the vaccine by the end of November – and a limited number of people may get the vaccine this year.

UK – Raab insists second lockdown WILL end on December 2 as mass testing to begin in 3 more towns

U

Dominic Raab has insisted that England’s second lockdown WILL end on December 2.

It comes as a mass testing programme trialled in Liverpool is set to be rolled out in three further English towns, which will be announced this week.

Meanwhile, doctors could hand out Covid vaccines on Christmas and Boxing Day under plans to protect millions of Brits quickly.

Family doctors are preparing to be able to offer the jab seven days a week between 8am and 8pm – while every major city will also get a dedicated mass Covid vaccination centre to speed up the roll-out.

Two Covid vaccines ‘could be ready by Christmas’ as NHS ready to ‘fire starting gun’ on roll out

T

Two coronavirus vaccines could be ready by Christmas, the head of the UK’s jab taskforce said today.

Kate Bingham told MPs she hopes we will see efficacy results for the Oxford vaccine and Pfizer’s jab within weeks.

If that happens there is a possibility of “deploying by year end”, she added.

It comes as NHS chief Sir Simon Stevens today told journalists that the health service is “ready to fire the starting gun” on rolling out doses “as and when it’s needed”.

He said: “No health services knows the availability of vaccines, we just need to make sure we are ready.

“Ten out of ten we could do it and be ready.”

Sir Simon said vaccines will be delivered at GP surgeries, pharmacies and mass testing centres – including at the Nightingale Hospitals.

He confirmed GPs will be on standby but said any mass vaccine programme was likely to start in the New Year – pending positive trial results.

UK PM Johnson says will roll out COVID tests on scale never seen before

U

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Wednesday his government would roll out new types of COVID-19 testing “on a scale never seen before” to stem the growing pandemic when a new lockdown in England expires on Dec. 2.

“At the expiry of this period on December 2 … we will be rolling out across this country new types of testing on a scale never seen before,” Johnson told parliament.

UK to roll out rapid COVID-19 testing in Liverpool

U

A half-million people in the English city of Liverpool will be regularly tested for COVID-19 in Britain’s first citywide trial of widespread, rapid testing that the government hopes will be a new weapon in combating the pandemic.

Testing will begin later this week at sites throughout the city using a variety of technologies, including new methods that can provide results in an hour or less, the government said in a statement Tuesday. Everyone who lives or works in the city in northwestern England will be offered the test, regardless of whether they have symptoms.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson hopes mass testing will provide a way out of the coronavirus crisis, which has killed more than 46,000 people across the U.K. in Europe’s deadliest outbreak. England is scheduled to go into a second national lockdown on Thursday as the government struggles to control a second wave of infections that risks swamping hospitals and emergency rooms.

Germany readies exhibition halls, mobile teams for COVID-19 vaccination

G

Germany is scouting trade fair halls and airport terminals to use as potential mass vaccination centres, as it draws up plans to inoculate the nation as soon as the first coronavirus shot gains European approval, state health officials told Reuters.

Berlin expects the first COVID-19 vaccines to be available in early 2021 and has given the country’s 16 states a Nov. 10 deadline to detail the addresses of 60 facilities that could serve as delivery centres for manufacturers.

Under the national vaccine strategy, approved by its cabinet last week, Germany has asked the states to identify central vaccination centres which will be supplemented by mobile teams who go into care homes.

The centralised approach underscores the potential logistical challenges facing governments, including limited supplies, multi-dose vials and complex storage requirements.

Some of the most advanced vaccines in human testing are so-called mRNA vaccines being developed by Moderna and BioNTech that need to be stored at temperatures as low as minus 80 degrees Celsius (-112 Fahrenheit).

In smaller, city states such as Hamburg and Bremen, authorities are scouting for central locations that are easy to reach like exhibition halls, where vaccinations could be stockpiled.

“We are on the lookout for larger locations that are centrally located and spacious. This could well be the airport or trade fair,” a spokesman for Hamburg’s health ministry said, adding no final decision has been taken.

Bigger, more rural states like Baden-Wuerttemberg and Schleswig-Holstein plan to distribute shots from a centralised delivery site into districts and towns, spokespeople for the health authorities said.

Germany has asked the Robert Koch Institute’s vaccine committee to identify which vulnerable population groups should get the shots first, although front-line workers are expected to be a priority.

In a second phase, when more vaccines are widely available in single-dose vials, Germany hopes to administer shots for the broader population at doctors’ practices.

An electronic register will record who has been vaccinated, while an app is being developed to allow people to record potential side effects.

Battle with disease could be over as early as the spring, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson claims

B

Britain’s battle with coronavirus could be over as early as the spring, Boris Johnson has claimed, as he fought to keep restive Tory MPs behind his plan for a four-week second lockdown in England.

Mr Johnson told the House of Commons there was “no alternative” to the package of tightened restrictions which he announced on Saturday, citing scientific advice that without action, there could be twice as many deaths over the winter as in the first wave of Covid-19 in the spring.

Mr Johnson made clear he was placing his hopes for an end to the crisis in the introduction of mass testing of millions of Britons, along with the potential development of vaccines and improved treatments.

He said that the army would be involved within the next few weeks in the roll-out of millions of rapid-turnaround tests, which would help reduce the crucial reproduction rate of the disease – known as R – below one by the time the new restrictions expire on 2 December.

The tests, capable of delivering a result within 10-20 minutes, had been shown to suppress the virus in hospitals, schools and universities, he said.

Mr Johnson told MPs: “While scientists are bleak in their predictions over the short term, they are unanimously optimistic about the medium and the long term.
