The agency said 83,930,495 people had received at least one dose while 45,533,962 people had been fully vaccinated as of Tuesday.

US trial of AstraZeneca jab confirms safety

U

Results from the long-awaited US trial of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid vaccine are out and confirm that the shot is both safe and highly effective.

More than 32,000 volunteers took part, mostly in America, but also in Chile and Peru.

The vaccine was 79% effective against stopping symptomatic Covid disease and 100% effective at preventing people from falling seriously ill.

And there were no safety issues regarding blood clots.

That should further reassure some EU countries that recently paused rollout of the vaccine amid concerns about a possible link.

Some are already starting to use it again now that Europe’s medicines regulator has completed its review and has also concluded the vaccine is safe and effective.

This new trial data may also prove useful in reassuring people about how well the vaccine works to protect the elderly against Covid-19 illness.

More than 126.5 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine have been administered in the United States, according to data published Monday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC reported that 126,509,736 total doses have been administered – about 81% of the 156,734,555 doses delivered. The CDC last updated total doses delivered on Saturday; CNN has reached out to the CDC to learn more about this.

About 1 in 4 people in the US – nearly 83 million people – have received at least one dose of vaccine, and more than 1 in 8 – about 45 million people – have been fully vaccinated, CDC data shows.

A total of 844,285 combined first and second doses were given on Saturday, up from 711,157 on Friday.

On Twitter, Prime Minister Boris Johnson thanked “everyone involved”.

More than 27.6 million people in the UK – more than half the adult population – have now received at least one dose of a vaccine.

Mr Johnson, who received his first dose on Friday, said: “A huge thank you to everyone involved and please come forward to get your jab when you are invited to do so.”

Sir Simon Stevens, chief executive of NHS England, added: “In just one day we vaccinated the equivalent of the entire adult populations of Liverpool, Southampton and Oxford combined.”

A slightly higher daily total of 873,784 was initially reported by the PM and Health Secretary Matt Hancock, who added later the figures from Scotland had “been revised down slightly” but it was “still our record day”.

1 in 6 US adults has been fully vaccinated for COVID-19, CDC says

1

Roughly one in every six U.S. adults has been fully vaccinated for the coronavirus, according to new data released Saturday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC’s vaccine tracker, which was updated Saturday afternoon, shows that 16.7 percent of the adult population has been fully vaccinated. More than 40 percent of adults aged 65 years and older are also fully vaccinated.

More than 121 million doses in total have been administered, and nearly 43 million adults are fully inoculated.

Three different vaccines for the coronavirus have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson. The Pfizer and Moderna shots require two doses for full efficacy, while the Johnson & Johnson vaccine requires just one inoculation.

More than 21 million of the fully vaccinated adults received the Pfizer shot, followed by 19.8 million who received the Moderna vaccine and 2.15 million who got the Johnson & Johnson shot, which was just recently released.

The Biden administration has already surpassed its goal of administering 100 million shots in its first 100 days as it ramps up its distribution efforts, but public health experts are urging people to continue to take precautions like wearing a mask and social distancing to prevent the further spread of the virus.
