In preliminary studies, trained dogs have succeeded in distinguishing between urine samples from healthy and those with coronary infection. The research is carried out by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Helsinki.

Dogs trained in odor separation have previously been successful in identifying people with cancer, among other things.

We already have solid experience in training dogs for odor separation. It was awesome to see how quickly the dogs took on a new smell again, says Anna Hielm-Björkman, head of research and DogRisk group, in a press release.

Based on preliminary tests, dogs could perform the task quickly and achieve even more reliable results than current molecular-based laboratory experiments.

Dogs trained in odor separation could be used to identify those infected with the coronavirus, for example, in nursing homes, screening hospital staff and serving customs at airports.
