New York, New Jersey and Connecticut all reported their lowest number of deaths in days on Sunday.
The tristate death toll was 680, almost 50 percent lower than the deadliest day of the outbreak just four days before, when 1,300 deaths were reported. It was the lowest one-day total since April 2.
While officials caution against putting much faith in a single day’s statistics, the three-day average number of deaths in the region is also down considerably: It stood at 839 deaths on Sunday, down from 1,193 as of last Thursday.
